Multi-trait selection of tomato introgression lines under drought-induced conditions at germination and seedling stages

To be considered drought-tolerant, a tomato cultivar is required to present some level of tolerance at all developmental stages plant growth. Since drought stage-specific phenomenon, genotype assessment must performed separately stages. In this study, we used multi-trait index based on factor analysis and genotype-ideotype distance (FAI-BLUP index) properly rank 49 genotypes according their stress conditions germination seedling Seeds 47 introgression lines, which M82 drought-sensitive, the Solanum pennellii wild accession LA 716, were subjected control condition, where seeds soaked in distilled water, polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution (-0.3 MPa). Drought stress, induced by PEG, had significant impact nine growth performance-related traits; there was reduction shoot length (SL), total (TL), initial percentage (IGP), final (FGP), velocity (GVI), rate (GR). contrast, root-to-shoot ratio (R/S) time reach 50% (T50) increased under stress. Root (RL) less affected drought, genotypes, it even increased. As expected, 716 ranked closest ideotype. IL 1-4-18, 2-3, 1-2, 9-2, 10-1 most drought-tolerant stage. These results will serve as guidance for breeders who are aiming developing drought-resistant cultivars.
